When we traveled from Albania (read here) back to Spain, I knew that the first part of our trip would not have many waves to surf on, but with the deep blue Adriatic sea and the mostly wave-less spots, I did think of checking out whether there is any kitesurfing in Ulcinj, Montenegro.
I got pleasantly surprised when I started reading about this super recommended spot in southern Montenegro: Ulcinj. Of course, I had to check it out, and do some kitesurfing there. Between May and October, there is an 80% wind guarantee: exactly what I need. And what a surprise: with nice and warm water (23-25 degrees, yay!) and weather, very few crowds (at least in June), and a huge beach, this seemed a perfect spot for me to continue practicing the sport of kitesurfing.
Where the kiting happens
The kitesurfing in Ulcinj happens at the beach called: Velika Plaza (Long Beach). This beach is next to the town of Ulcinj and spreads over a distance of 14 km. Reliable thermal wind systems guarantee optimal kitesurfing conditions from May till September.
There are no rocks or riffs and you can stand in large parts of the shore. Furthermore are the winds mostly onshore and constant.
There are different schools around, most of them with a piece of the beach (and sea) that is for their students. This way, you can practice your new skills without feeling you stand in the way of anyone. Again, there is more than enough space for everyone! Examples of schools are Ka´banya Kitesurf, Kiteriders Montenegro and Kiteloop
There are lots of small little bars on the beach, though most open only in the summer months. Along the main road from Ulcinj to Velika Plaza, there are some restaurants and small supermarkets. For everything else: Ulcinj town is the place to be!
What kite to take?
The wind is usually between 10 and 20 knots. Therefore, the smallest kite would be a 9m (depending on your board and weight of course). At every school, you can also rent equipment.
How to get to Ulcinj
Your best bet is to fly to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. About 75 km away, you can either take a bus which takes about 2 hours.
How to get around?
You can take a taxi from Ulcinj to most kite schools at the beach. Count on an average of 8,- euros roundtrip.
Where to stay?
Ulcinj is a popular beach town and thus has many options for accommodation: whether you want an Airbnb, a hostel (the most popular one is Pirate Hostel); a campsite (with your own tent) or a 4* hotel, it´s all there. We traveled in our van and were allowed to stay at one of the kite schools of Kiteloop. They even let us use the toilet and shower, also during the evenings/nights.
I hope with this brief blog with information you are all ready to get stoked on your next kitesurfing adventure in Ulcinj, Montenegro.
