Europe: Surf, Work, and Family-Friendly Vibes

Peniche, Portugal

Peniche is one of Portugal’s top surf spots, offering pretty consistent waves year-round. It’s also known for being a relatively low-key town, with a growing remote work scene. There are several co-working spaces and cafés with good Wi-Fi, you are allowed to stay with your van (though it might be a bit more complicated in August) and, bonus, Peniche is super family-friendly, with sheltered beaches and surf schools that offer lessons for kids (from three years old). If your Portuguese is more or less, almost everyone speaks English(ish).

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain

Las Palmas is a bustling, year-round surf destination. The best time is when winter hits the rest of Europe, since you´ll be garanteed a nice 20 degrees. It´s very popular among digital nomads with plenty of co-working spaces and reliable Wi-Fi. When it comes to kids, Las Palmas has shallow beaches, parks, and plenty of cafes to chill in when you need a break. Plus, you’ll get the benefit of Canarian (which is like the best mix between Europe and Latin America) culture, which is always a bonus.

San Sebastián, Spain

If you love surfing and want to enjoy some of the best food in Europe, San Sebastián is a must. This surf town is known for its fantastic surf breaks right in town, especially for intermediate surfers, but there are plenty of beginner spots too. It’s even more laid-back than other large Spanish beach towns, making it great for families. Kid-friendly beaches, cultural activities, and a bunch of playgrounds make it a perfect spot for the whole family. It´s easy to rent a place for longer time as well (a couple of months) and there are more and more foreigners (and families) making the move here.

Latin America: Surf, Culture, and Adventure for Families

Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Santa Teresa is a small, charming surf town on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. It’s a great spot for digital nomads, especially if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of bigger cities. The surf here is great for all levels, and the town has a good selection of cafés and co-working spaces. Families will love the gentle beach sections, local wildlife, and tons of outdoor activities like hiking, zip-lining, and horseback riding.

Sayulita, Mexico

Sayulita is one of Mexico’s best-known surf towns, with a laid-back vibe and a solid expat community (though largely from the USA, which took us a bit for surprise). The surf here is perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers, with plenty of surf schools offering lessons. For families, Sayulita is ideal. The town is full of colorful streets, art, and culture, and you’ll find lots of family-friendly cafés and activities. It’s a great place to let your kids experience the vibrant local culture while you catch some waves. If your Spanish is so-so, no worries because we felt so many people spoke English here!

Pipa, Brazil

Pipa is a relatively hidden gem in northeastern Brazil, offering fantastic surf with a blue sea and palmtrees. It’s still a bit of a secret, but for digital nomads, Pipa has a small but growing remote work scene, and the infrastructure is good enough to get your work done without any problems. For families, the beaches are calm, with shallow waters that are perfect for kids. You can also take them to see dolphins, explore lush nature parks, or just enjoy the peaceful vibe.

Asia: Surf, Work, and Family-Friendly Adventures

Bali, Indonesia (Canggu or Medewi)

Bali is probably the most known as a digital nomad and family hotspot, and for good reason. Canggu and Medewi are two of the best areas for surfers, offering everything from mellow waves to more challenging breaks. The remote work scene here is booming, with a ton of co-working spaces and cafés that cater to nomads. Bali also offers plenty of family-friendly amenities—think kid-friendly cafés, playgrounds, and beaches with gentle surf. It’s the perfect place if you want to balance work and adventure with your little ones.

Siargao, Philippines

Siargao has quickly become one of the most popular surf destinations in the Philippines, and it’s perfect for digital nomads. The surf here is world-class, with Cloud 9 being one of the most famous spots. It’s a bit more laid-back compared to Bali, and you’ll find a growing community of remote workers. Families will love the calm lagoons, island hopping, and the relaxed atmosphere. Siargao is a great spot to unplug and enjoy nature with your kids while you work remotely.

Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka

Hikkaduwa is another great surf destination in Asia that’s also incredibly family-friendly. Sri Lanka offers warm waters and consistent surf for all levels, and Hikkaduwa is known for its relaxed vibe. It’s an affordable spot for digital nomads, with good Wi-Fi and plenty of co-working spaces. For families, Hikkaduwa is perfect. Kids can enjoy gentle beach waves, turtle-watching, and exploring the area’s natural beauty.

Final Thoughts

Finding spots for surfing digital nomads that are kid-friendly is the ultimate digital nomad dream. Whether you’re looking for consistency in the waves or a laid-back vibe with good Wi-Fi, these destinations across Europe, Latin America, and Asia offer the perfect mix of work and play for remote workers with kids.
